How Donated Tech Made It Easier To Get An Abortion

Women and trans people seeking an abortion have had to navigate through a maze of healthcare providers, restrictions and anti-abortion agencies designed to stigmatize their decisions.

SHORE Centre, Kitchener's local Planned Parenthood affiliate, knew a better way was possible, but didn't know where to start. In 2017, Communitech welcomed SHORE Centre into their Fierce Founders bootcamp for female-led startups and shortly afterwards Zeitspace, a software consultancy, generously offered to build them an online app to connect local patients to their nearest provider.

Now Choice Connect is launching nationally at True North, and will help thousands of Canadian women and trans people access the care they need.

Lyndsey Butcher is the Executive Director of SHORE Centre, a Kitchener-based charity that provides accurate sexual health education and pro-choice pregnancy options support.  

In 2017, Lyndsey completed Communitech’s Fierce Founders program and began a two-year partnership with local tech company Zeitspace to develop ChoiceConnect.ca. The result was an app that matches women and trans people seeking an abortion to a healthcare provider who best meets their needs.

Lyndsey is an outspoken advocate for women’s rights and reproductive justice and holds a Master of Social Work from Wilfrid Laurier University and a Bachelor of Social Work from St. Thomas University.
