One telling example is that 1.2 billion people in the world live without electric light, with substantial negative impact to productivity, education and security.
What can we do about it? University of Toronto Professor and Impact Centre Director, Cynthia Goh advocates for the translation of scientific discovery into technology and products that benefit society. With specific reference to her efforts to create and power low-cost LED lighting in the Philippines, Dr. Goh will explore the opportunity to empower developing communities with tech. Read MoreCynthia Goh is a Professor of Chemistry, cross-appointed to the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, the Institute of Medical Science and the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto. Her research centers on the interactions and properties of very large molecules, which has impact on nanotechnology, biomaterials and biodiagnostics.
Having co-founded eight companies with her students, Cynthia advocates the translation of scientific discovery to technology and products that benefit society, the training of scientist-entrepreneurs and the development of technology for low resource settings. She is the founder and Director of the Impact Centre, an institute that aims to bring science to society, and the inaugural Academic Director of University of Toronto Entrepreneurship.
