Speaking Session:

How to Prepare for a Future of Continuous Workplace Learning and Unconventional Career Paths

Thursday, June 20 @ 12:15 PM - 12:35 PM Stage B

In the next few years, half of today’s jobs will be replaced by automation and AI. At the same time, 133 million new jobs – like AI-Assisted Healthcare Technician, Augmented Reality Journey Builder, and AI Lawyer – will be created, thanks to the ubiquity of AI. Before the second industrial revolution, we couldn't comprehend what a telephone operator was, and before the third industrial revolution, we had never heard the term "software engineer." Similarly, jobs will emerge in the oncoming years that we can’t even conceive of now.

Given the rapid pace at which jobs will disappear and new ones will emerge, while also factoring in trends of the gig economy and lengthening life expectancies, employees will need to learn, un-learn, and re-learn over and over again. The responsibility to accommodate this shift will fall on workplace talent leaders. Just as the general workforce will need to shift to a continuous learning approach in their careers, it is imperative that HR and talent leaders remain nimble and take a learn, un-learn, and re-learn approach to hiring and deploying talent in this new world of work. In this session, Plum CEO Caitlin MacGregor will provide a glimpse into the future of work, which will include unconventional and “latticed” (versus “ladder”) career paths. She will provide actionable insight into next steps working professionals can take today to prepare to navigate this new landscape, which includes increasing self-awareness and development of transferable skills and innate talents. She will also take a deep dive into how HR & talent leaders can take steps today to make their talent processes more fluid and data-driven in preparation for the future of work and learning.
